Hayes Lowe
Alabamians in Thrall's Battery
Tue Jan 23 13:22:28 2001

I wasn't able to make much progress in looking at those who enlisted in Lowndes Co., Miss., which is where I thought would be the most likely place to find Pickens Co., Ala. men enlisting in this Battery.

Almost to a man, the names in question were found on both Pickens Co. and Lowndes Co. censuses, so there was no way to distinquish between them.

Here are the ones that we know were from Alabama, and which county they were from or enlisted in:

Redis, James
Private; enlisted at Marion, Alabama, August 19, 1863.

Gibson, Joel
Private; enlisted at Talladega, Alabama, September 14, 1863.

Holcomb, Edwin M
Private; enlisted at Jasper, Alabama, September 6, 1862.

VAIL, Andrew J.
Private; enlisted in Columbus, Miss. on 7/17/1863. Resident of Pickens Co., Alabama.

VAIL, Francis M.
Private; resident of Pickens Co., Alabama.

I haven't looked too closely at those that enlisted at Macon, Miss. Macon is only 10 miles from the Pickens County line. Based on the last names of the men enlisted at Macon, there is a very good likilihood that all were from Pickens, Greene, or Sumter Counties, Ala. Also based on last names, there is a very good possibility that all those whose enlistment location is not shown in the records were from Pickens County.

You can see a partial list here: http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/jackson.html">
