Alan PittsHouston's "Franklin Scouts"Thu Jan 18 23:19:54 2001 Organized at Cherokee, Ala., Dec. 21, 1861, this company operated near Fort Henry on the Kentucky line until the area was lost by the Confederates. It became 1st Co. "H" of the 1st COnfederate Cav. on Apr. 1, 1862, and remained with that unit for about two months. J. M. Turner has a record with that unit.Late next summer the company joined Roddey's 4th Alabama Cavalry as Co. "L". By that time Captain Houston had resigned and his place taken by John E. Newsom. Newsom eventually became major of thsi regiment, but resigned in early 1864. I'm not an expert on Tennessee units, but I did see the name 'John Turner' with CO. "D" of Newsom's Tennessee Cavalry, which may have been a regiment raised by the same man in early 1864.I didn't review Moreland's Regiment, but didn't see that name listed in its records. They're quite spotty, so it doesn;t mean he didn't belong; only that there's no record under that name. You might also check pension and 1907 Alabama veterans census. Good luck! J.M.
