"Stone's Alabama Sharpshooter's Battalion" was the part of the 40th Ala. Infantry that did not surrender at Vicksburg. Most of the regiment surrendered and was sent to parole camp. The battalion was commanded by:

STONE, Thomas O., Lt. Col. commanding (Resident of Pickens County.)

Off the top of my head, I don't remember which companies of the 40th made up this battalion.
