: Lee, a good deal of that war was fought with honor. If a man was captured he was sent to the rear with little armed or no escort. It would make sense to me that (1) he did escape from his escort and was really never a POW or (2) he is shown as a POW because the paper work was done and in the course of the battle as the Union army retreated he was liberated. If you haven't tried to get info from the National Archives, do so. That is where a lot of Union info is held.
