UCV Records

Jim,
I got this information second hand, so I'm not certain how accurate it is, but I have been told that during World War II, the existing UCV records were donated to a "patriotic" scrap paper drive for the war effort.

I know that the only records that I have ever located about Kentucky UCV camps were newspaper articles and a set of small membership directories that were done between the years 1891-1895. I have also consulted the old UCV programs for lists of camps and addresses. Other than these sources, I don't know of any UCV records still being in existence. I am told that GAR records are not much better than there Southern counterparts.

As for a Confederate Patriot index like that of the DAR, Broadfoot publishing in North Carolina has compiled an index to the Compiled Service records of Union and Confederate volunteers. It is published in book form and on CD-Rom. However, like the "Confederate Veteran" magazine reprint, it is rather pricy. The CD-Rom sells for over $400.

The SCV is getting ready to publish a membership directory listing SCV members and up to 5 ancestors. I have heard a lot of SCV members complain about "invasion of privacy," but I have a similar book that the SAR compiled in 1996 and it is invaluable in locating other members who are related to you or have ancestors that served in the same unit as your ancestors.
Hope this helps,
Steve
