Thanks to your information on another thread regarding the list of Univ. of Alabama students, I was able to find who James J. Garret was. I didn't locate anything on Jesse L., though.

James J. was James Jackson Garrett. He was not a student in 1860 at the U of A. He is shown there in 1856. He was from Forkland (Greene County?). If I interpret the listing correctly, he first enrolled at the U of A. in 1853. In 1860, he was a professor at Centenary Institute in Summerfield.

He joined the 44th Alabama Infantry as a Private, was promoted to Ordnance Sgt., and then Lt. He was alive in 1901, and was a lawyer in Birmingham.
