Hilliard's Legion was organized in June of 1862 in Montgomery
. It originally consisted of 3 infantry battalions, a cavalry battalion, and an artillery battalion. The cavalry unit was quickly detached and consolidated with other Confederate cavalry units. The artillery battalion was used as infantry, though it kept artillery in its name. The four were part of Gracie's Brigade at Chickmauga.
In November 1863 the four units were reorganized into two infantry regiments (the 59th and 60th) and the 23rd Alabama Battalion Sharpshooters. So, depending on the timing, JGH could appear on the role of the Legion, the 60th, or the 23rd. They all continues as part of Gracie's Brigade (Moody's after 12/64). If you can pin down some further information (e.g., county of enlistment, age) you may be able to track him down via a request to the Ala Dept Archives and History.
