Mary: The official records list the unit as Burtwell's Cavalry. Capt., (later Gen.) John D. Burtwell was given orders to recruit a unit fron Huntsville Ala. and surounding towns and counties.I can not locate any thing indicating how many men he enlisted but his cav. unit was at least several companies.I do not know if his comand was made up of those he recruited.Many times during the conflict several depleated Co.s were consolidated into other units. Hope this helps more that confuses.. jimc
