I suggest that you get a copy of "From That Terriable Field, Civil War Letters of James M. Williams, Twenty-First Alabama Infantry Volunteers" edited by John Kent Folmar published by The University of Alabama Press in 1981 and second printing in 1986. This book contains letters that James Williams wrote to his wife during the war and give a very detailed day to day description of life in the regiment. He enlisted as a private soldier in 1861 and was a Lt.Col. at the end of the war.
