Free State of Winston
Tue Dec 26 18:31:38 2000

Winston County's delegate to the Succession convention was one of the few to vote against withdrawal from the union even after being given a chance to change his vote on a second ballot. The first vote was 54 to 45 for succession. As far as the loyalties of the people the County was evidently split pretty much down the middle. Winston Co. furnished as many troops to the Confederacy as to the federals. As for actually withdrawing from Alabama there was much talk then about the "Free State of Winston" as it was and is still sometimes called, but never any formal attempt to do so. By the way just a few years ago the citizens of Winston erected a monument to those from the County who served in the War Between the States. It is dedicated to both sides and includes the federal and Confederate flags.
