I generally use two sources. The first are the actual paroles found in the service records. These appear in the service records of the regiment in which they surrendered. You see them as a single entry on microfilm when the soldier belonged to a different regiment. I reviewed service records of most Alabama units which surrendered with Johnston and made lists of these men. Then I went to the index and found their original units.

The second is the State Archives. Once in a while you might come across a surrender record which fills in the gaps. Anything else that really helps is rare.

I'm certainly prone to mistakes and would welcome review and questioning by any knowledgable person. My files on these regiments should include the hand-written lists I composed while reviewing microfilm service records. I have final disposition of each company available in my regimental summaries if you're interested. I'd be pleased to pass these along if you'll include the proper credit when you publish. Send me your email address or I'll put copies in my mailbox for you.
