Just thought that I would throw this into the conversation: one of my great-grandfathers was Cpl. William Larkin of Co. B, Alabama Corps of Cadets and a student at the University during the war. He and the other members of the Cadet Corps were assigned as drill instructors to newly enlisted and/or conscripted soldiers. In the cases where sometimes newly formed units were trained there, several times the older cadets were elected as officers of these units and went into the service with them.
