Companies (designated A,B,C etc. approx., 100 men per Co.)were usually formed locally of men from a single community. A regiment (designated by number) was made up of 10 companies. All the regiments that I have looked at had companies raised in several different counties. I don't know if this was intentional or not. Elements of the 18th; 25th; 33rd and 40th Alabama were raised in Covington County. At least one Company of the 29th was raised in neighboring Conecuh. Many times men who lived near a Co. line would join a company with their neighbors.
