Hayes Lowe
Dumping of Confederate supplies.

I don't have any proof of it, but it is likely.

The 15th and 16th Confederate Cavalrys were both there at the end of the war. The 15th Confederate Cavalry, Company G, surrendered on 4/30/1865 at Demopolis. Other companies likely did, too. At least part of the 16th fell back to Demopolis after the fall of Mobile.

The troops would likely have dumped all their Confederate supplies in order for them not to fall into Union hands. Ironically, if they had fallen into Union hands, the Union soldiers would have likely dumped them, too. That's what they did at Selma, if I recall correctly, with everything that they didn't burn. Wilson's Raiders were cavalry and mounted infantry, and were travelling as light as possible. They couldn't carry all those supplies that they captured, so they destroyed them.
