Hayes, Thanks! I will be most appreciative of any information that you have concerning this. I have as yet found anyone who has any knowledge of this. My father lived in a house very near this spot in the 1930s and this is how he knew about the gun emplacements. I asked the lady in charge of the UDC of Sumter County about this several years ago who was raised near this area many years ago ( a contemporary of my father)and she did not know of its existence either and no one seems to know where the cannon at the courthouse came from. To me this is almost unbelieveable. I found vauge reference to this cannon being pulled from the river about 1900 or so in a doctorial dissertation on the history of the county and the only footnote about this was private personal papers of someone that lived somewhere in the northeastern U.S. Surely there is someone who knows something.
